ripped by the sun's claw
Five Rivers.  The period of Earth's history that began 2.5 billion years ago and ended 543 million years ago is known as the Proterozoic. With the beginning of the Middle Proterozoic comes the first evidence of oxygen build-up in the atmosphere.

I saw you running on the terraces, I saw you fight against the wind, The coldness bled on your lips, And I have seen you break and rejoice at being dead, you who are more beautiful than lightning, when it stains the white windowpanes of your blood. The dying summer had chapped you with listless pleasure, we felt only scorn for the marred joys of living. "Rather Ivy" you would say, "the way it clings to the stones of its night: presence without exit, face without roots. "Last radiant windowpane ripped by the sun's claw, rather in the mountains this village to die in. "Rather this wind..."   Yves Bonnefoy, translated by Galway Kinnell.
